Three People Killed, Over 310 Injured in Earthquake in Iran - Reports

Strong earthquake hit near Iran's Bakhtaran, several people were injured and at least one died according to Mehr news agency.

The number of victims in the earthquake in western Iran increased to three and another 310 were injured, local media reported Sunday.

Earlier in the day, media reported that two people died and were 232 injured.

The data of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) showed that a 6.1-magnitude quake hit the Iranian Kermanshah province, located near the Iraqi border, late on Saturday. Media reported right after the incident that one person had been killed and 58 others had been wounded in the earthquake.

The Mehr news agency reported on Sunday, citing Houshang Bazvand, the governor general of the Kermanshah province, that 90 of those injured had been treated by medics after the quake.

Those killed were a 70-year-old man, who had died from a heart attack, and a pregnant woman, the same outlet reported, citing Mehdi Mohammadi, the director general of the Public Relations Department at the Kermanshah Medical Sciences University.

A strong magnitude 6.1 earthquake has hit 55 miles off Bakhtaran, Iran, the United States Geological survey reported.

Bakhtaran is located more than 300 miles west from Iran's capital city of Tehran. The city is home to 946,651 according to the census data from 2016.

The quake was registered at 22:13 GMT, with the epicenter located 31 kilometers (8 miles) to the west of the town of Javanrud at the depth of 10 kilometers, according to the USGS data.

According to the Press-TV broadcaster, at least one person died and 58 others were injured in the quake.

Previous month, Iran experienced several earthquakes in a row. A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Iran's southeastern Kerman province after three earthquakes hit country earlier. Some 290 people were injured as a result of a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in the country's western province of Kermanshah back then.
