Populist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is set to win Sunday's Mexican presidential elections in a landslide, according to polls.

Most voting locations in Mexico closed at 6 pm, local time. Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador — a known opponent to Trump policies — is now slated to be headed for the win.

An official quick-count revealed that Lopez Obrador took the lead with 53-53.8% of votes, according to the electoral authority.

The President of the United States took to Twitter to congratulate Lopez Obrador with the election victory, saying that he was looking "very much forward to working with him".

Opponents of Obrador, have recognized their defeat and Obrador's victory in the election.

According to the latest results provided by the National Electoral Institute (INE), Obrador got 46 percent of votes, ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) candidate Jose Antonio Meade Kuribrena 18.5 percent, Ricardo Anaya Cortes from the Civil Front for Mexico over 28 percent of votes and Jaime Heliodoro Rodriguez Calderon — more than 5 percent of votes

"The tendencies of the vote do not favor us, we are not the winners, that is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who obtained the majority [of votes] in the presidential election," Meade said at a meeting with his supporters and wished good luck to Obrador.

Later, Obrador's main opponent Anaya also recognized his defeat.

"I see that the results [of the voting] are favorable for Lopez Obrador. I recognize his victory, I have already talked to him and wish hum success in the work for the benefit of Mexico," Anaya said.

Calderon congratulated Obrador on his victory and also wished him success.

Lopez Obrador, who is leading in the country's election, vowed to eradicate corruption in the country. "We will eradicate corruption in Mexico," Obrador told journalists on late Sunday, as quoted by the TV Azteca broadcaster.

Scheduled for 11 p.m., local time, in Mexico City, the nation's electoral regulator INE released a televised statement of its so-called rapid count, a key indicator of election results.
