Mexico has gained a 1-0 win over reigning champions Germany in their opening match of the World Cup in Moscow. The game was held at the 81,000-seater Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital on Sunday.

The only goal of the game was scored by Mexico winger Hirving Lozano in the 35th minute. Following the match, Lozano was named the best player of the game.

Commenting on the results of the match, Lozano said it was the best goal in his career.

"It's the best goal I've scored in my entire life. We all dream of playing in a World Cup — and to start in such a positive and important way — I think it's my best goal so far," Lozano said, as quoted by the FIFA website.

The winger then added that he didn't know "if it's the biggest victory in (Mexico's) history, but one of the biggest for sure. It's great to start on the right foot when you are playing the world champions."

According to Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio said that his side was not the favorites to win Group F, despite their shock 1-0 victory.

"I think we played really well. Sweden will be difficult to beat. We have experience of playing against them. They knocked out Italy in qualifying for the tournament, so I would not go as far as saying that we are the absolute favorites to win the group," Osorio told reporters at the post-match press conference.

According to Germany's team, FC Cologne and the team's defender Jonas Hector missed his team's first 2018 FIFA World Cup match against Mexico due to a cold.

Besides Germany, France in 2002 and Spain in 2014 were the other defending champions to lose their opening matches and neither of the two teams advanced from the group stage.

According to FIFA, 78,011 fans attended the game, making it the second consecutive full house at the stadium so far at the tournament. Germany will next face Sweden, while Mexico will take on South Korea, with both games taking place on Saturday.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on Thursday and will continue through July 15, with a total of 64 matches set to be played at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities.
