After almost eight years of preparations, Russia for the first time in its history hosts the FIFA World Cup - one of the world's major football championships.

The host nation took on Saudi Arabia in the 81,000-seater Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital in the opening match of the tournament and marmalized the Saudi team, with a final tally of 5-0.

The match followed the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, which was attended by leaders from 20 countries, as well as Brazilian football legend Ronaldo, opera singer Aida Garifullina and British singer Robbie Williams.

The championship will last for a month and will be held at 12 stadiums in 11 Russian cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Volgograd and Samara. Over 2.5 million World Cup tickets have been sold to fans worldwide as of June 9.
