Constructing the border wall has been Donald Trump's signature pledge on his presidential campaign.

On Monday, the US president reiterated his support for the creation of a wall on the border with Mexico.

"Any deal on DACA that does not include STRONG border security and the desperately needed WALL is a total waste of time. March 5th is rapidly approaching and the Dems seem not to care about DACA. Make a deal!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

The DACA program protects undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States when they were young children.

Republican Senator John McCain and Democratic Senator Chris Coons plan to introduce legislation on Monday that will provide DACA recipients a pathway to citizenship and implement new border security.

"Our legislation, which already has broad support in the House of Representatives, would address the most urgent priorities of protecting Dreamers, strengthening border security, alleviating the backlog in immigration courts, and addressing the root causes of illegal immigration," McCain said in a press release on Monday.

Last week, the Trump administration unveiled its own legislative framework for an immigration deal, which would protect the DACA program, but included $25 billion in funding for a border wall, as well as an end to extended-family migration and the diversity visa lottery program.

Constructing the border wall to curb illegal immigration and combat drug trafficking has been President Donald Trump's signature pledge on the campaign trail and during his presidency. Shortly after taking office in January, of 2017 Trump signed an executive order to initiate the border wall project.
