On December 14, the Syrian Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the UN Security Council and to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres accusing the US-led coalition of killing civilians in the province of Deir Ez-Zor by airstrikes, according to local media.

The Syrian government also charged the US-led coalition at the UN with making deals with the remnants of Daesh and coordinating its actions, as multiple reports appeared on the media that the US evacuated terrorist leaders from several areas across the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor. According to Damascus, US air power has been even used even to stage 'accidental' attacks on Syrian forces as they advanced against the militants.

The overwhelming defeat of the Daesh terrorist group in Syria became possible after a series of major successful operations in the country.

In November 2017, Syrian army supported by Russian Aerospace Forces managed to liberate the city of Deir ez-Zor, which has been under Daesh siege since 2014. The successful military actions in the province of Deir ez-Zor led to the liberation by government forces of the last major Daesh stronghold in the country, the town of Abu Kamal which ultimately led to complete expulsion of Daesh militants from the area.
