US Election Cybersecurity Bill Seeks to Deter Foreign Meddling - Senator

New US Senate legislation aims to boost cybersecurity of state election systems to prevent foreign actors from interfering in future votes, Senator James Lankford’s office said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — During the 2016 presidential election, the release said, the intelligence community established that Russia launched cyberattacks against 21 state election systems.

"Lankford… today introduced the Secure Elections Act, a bill to strengthen election cybersecurity in America and protect against foreign interference in future elections," the release said on Thursday.

The US Senate Secure Elections Act bill was introduced by Lankford and two other Republican colleagues and three Democratic senators.

In November, DHS National Programs Security Chief Christopher Krebs said in congressional testimony that Russian hackers never attacked a single US voting system during the 2016 election.

Russian officials have repeatedly denied allegations of interfering in the 2016 election, characterizing them as part of an absurd and hysterical propaganda campaign designed to demonize Russia.
