WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have been ordered to cooperate with the US Defense Department to find and resolve any problems with military reporting of criminal records of gun buyers, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a memorandum.
"I am directing the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to take the following actions: work with the Department of Defense to identify and resolve any issues with the military reporting of convictions," the memorandum said on Wednesday.
Jeff Sessions has also directed the FBI and the ATF to examine other US federal agencies that are not fully transferring information about gun buyers and owners to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
On November 5, Devin Kelley opened fire at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Spring, killing at least 26 people and wounding 20 others. The shooter had received a bad conduct discharge from the US Air Force after being convicted for assaulting his wife and step-child and subsequently being imprisoned for 12 months. He was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force.
