WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation on the Trump campaign, Russia and the 2016 US election has honed in on a former business associate of ex-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn for his role in failing to disclose that Flynn's lobbying firm was conducting work for foreign governments.
Federal investigators have interviewed multiple witnesses in recent weeks about Khan's work for Turkey, the media reports said.
In early March, Flynn registered the Flynn Intel Group as required by the Foreign Agents Registration Act for working on behalf of a firm owned by a Turkish national with links to Turkish institutions.
Flynn reportedly discussed ways to extradite Fethullah Gulen from the United States. Gulen is suspected by the Turkish government of masterminding an attempted coup in July 2016.
Earlier, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said during a congressional hearing that he had no information of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's ties to the government of Turkey.
"I don't believe I had information to that affect," Sessions said when asked whether he was aware that Flynn was working for Turkey when acting as a surrogate for President Donald Trump's campaign.
The US Attorney General pointed out that he was aware Turkish officials continued to press the federal government, seeking the return of Gullen to Ankara, but added that he had no idea about an alleged $15 million kidnapping plan with Flynn's involvement.
