Zimbabwe's Ruling Party: President Mugabe Has 24 Hours to Leave Office

The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) announced that the Zimbabwean parliament had decided to impeach President Robert Mugabe, who has ruled the country since the 1980s.

On Tuesday, the Zimbabwean parliament held a session as ZANU-PF had brought the motion on the impeachment of the 93-year-old president. Members of parliament and senate across the political divide were all in the house when the motion was moved and seconded.

Moreover, the deliberations are expected to begin at 16:30 hours today and are expected to run until 3 am tomorrow. A 9-member committee is expected to be put in place.

The process to impeach President Robert Mugabe has begun with the Speaker of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda reading the rules and regulations of how are they are supposed to proceed.

Last week, the country’s military deployed armored vehicles to the Zimbabwean capital city of Harare, confining Mugabe, 93, to his house, while ZANU-PF urged the leader to step down. On Monday, following Mugabe's failure to meet the ruling party's ultimatum to resign, the party decided to begin impeachment proceedings.
