The town of Abu Kamal in the Deir ez-Zor province had been the last major Daesh stronghold in Syria until it was liberated by the government forces with Russia's aerial assistance last week.

"On November 17, six Tu-22M3 strategic bombers, which took off from an airfield in Russia, having flown over Iran and Iraq, carried out a group airstrike on Islamic State [ISIS, Daesh, banned in Russia] facilities near the city of Abu Kamal," the Russian Defense Ministry has announced.

The strikes hit terrorists' strongholds, a number of militants and some armored vehicles with means of reconnaissance confirming the targets' destruction.

Russian aicraft have been carrying out airstrikes in the area for the second day in a row following last week's liberation of the town Abu Kamal, which had been the last Daesh stronghold in the war-torn country, by the Syrian army.

The ministry's announcement comes amid a major operation that has been conducted by the Syrian army in the Deir ez-Zor province following the historic lifting of the three-year Daesh siege of Deir ez-Zor city, which has so far resulted in its complete liberation and the victory in al-Mayadin, the once largest terrorist stronghold in the region.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry's data, over 90 percent of the Syrian territory has already been liberated from terrorists with the assistance of Moscow that had launched the operation in the Arab Republic at the request of President Bashar Assad in September 2015 and is due to "be completed soon."
