The local administration says letting beggars roam freely at a time when high-level foreign delegates are visiting the city would be a safety issue. Ensuring smooth vehicular traffic has also been cited as a reason behind the cosmetic drive.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — American President Donald Trump's daughter and Advisor Ivanka Trump is visiting India's southern city of Hyderabad and the poor already are bearing the brunt. The city's authorities, in an attempt to spruce it up, have started rounding up beggars from the street.

Ivanka Trump will jointly inaugurate the Global Entrepreneurship Summit to be held in Hi-tech city Hyderabad along with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several foreign delegates are expected to attend the 3-day summit that starts on November 28.

Apart from attending the Global Entrepreneur Summit, sightseeing and city trip is part of the official schedule of Ivanka during her visit to Hyderabad. She will also interact with local entrepreneurs.

On the first day of the drive Wednesday, nearly 400 beggars were taken away from the Goshamahal area and lodged at the rehabilitation center at the Chanchalguda Jail in the city, according to local media. In all, about 6,000 beggars in the city will be shifted to rehab centers and shelters for homeless as per an independent estimate by the media.

"Many beggars are also employing children and handicapped persons to solicit or receive alms at the main junctions of the road. Some are exposing in an indecent manner to divert the attention of the vehicular traffic as well as pedestrians and public, in general, to induce them to give alms. Such acts are causing annoyance and awkwardness," the notification issued by the local government read.

Begging has been prohibited under Section 144 of criminal procedure code 1973 and the order would remain in force for two months, it added.

"Some beggars argued that we were taking their freedom to live anywhere they want but we told them it was for their own good because they are going to the rehab centers where they will be taken care of," a senior police official said. Hyderabad Police had conducted a similar operation when former US President Bill Clinton visited the city in the year 2000.
