An ingenious Japanese inventor paved the way for an entire brand of gadgets which appear to be extremely useful but turn out to be utterly worthless.

Japanese inventor Keiji Kawakami came up with the concept of chindogu – gadgets that appear extremely handy but are actually too impractical and absurd to use — while working as an editor for the Mail Order Life magazine.

According to Kawakami, a true chindogu must be impractical and serve as an embodiment of the spirit of anarchy. Also, these gadgets should not be sold or otherwise make a profit for their creator as their concept was essentially born out of Kawakami’s distaste for consumerism and materialism.

Here are but some of his inventions.

Chopsticks fitted with a miniature fan to help chill hot food.

A support stick that prevents you from tumbling down when falling asleep while commuting.

And a portable tissues dispenser which is essentially a roll of toilet paper fixed on the user’s head.
