The recent escalation of the situation around the Kurds has spread outside the Middle East.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — A total of four people were injured and over 40 detained following clashes Sunday night between ethnic Turks and Kurds in the Belgium city of Antwerp, a police source told Sputnik.

According to the source, one policeman was among those wounded. Two people were arrested on charges of illegal possession of firearms, the source added.

The Belga news agency reported that the rioters fought with bats and steel bars and threw Molotov cocktails at police officers.

The clashes reportedly started on Friday, when a bus carrying supporters of the Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara), who is serving a life sentence in Turkey, arrived in a Turkish neighborhood in Antwerp.
