17:00 GMT 18.10.2017 (Updated: 18:47 GMT 06.03.2023) Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Barcelona to protest the arrest of two influential leaders of the region's movement to secede from Spain.
The protest was attended by members of the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona City Hall. It is reported that about five hundred students from the University of Barcelona left classes to join the protest. Protesters shouted slogans, lighting candles in protest against the arrest of the leaders. The demonstrations are to continue in the evening.
