The issue of Russia possibly compensating Ukraine over Crimea is not under discussion as no annexation took place, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – "Here it has to be noted that from the legal point of view it is impossible to speak of annexation from either a factual or a legal point of view. It is wrong and accordingly it is impossible to speak of any compensation," Peskov told reporters.

According to the spokesman, the Kremlin considers Zaman’s words "a part of an intra-European discussion."

At the same time, the Kremlin hopes that the Russian-Ukrainian relations will normalize in the future.

"We hope that with time this recognition will take place, respect should be shown for the will expression of the several-million population of [the Crimean] peninsula. We also hope that later… there will probably be a normalization of Russian-Ukrainian relations," Peskov said when asked how important for the Kremlin was the recognition by Ukraine of Crimea's reunification with Russia.

Earlier this week, Czech President Milos Zeman said that he saw a possibility for Moscow to compensate Kiev financially or with oil and gas for Crimea’s secession from Ukraine and its reunification with Russia. Zeman also stressed that Crimea becoming part of Russia was a fait accompli.
