Russia and Latvia can cooperate closely, working side by side, Latvia's Transport Minister and Russia-Latvia intergovernmental commission co-chairman Uldis Augulis said Sunday.

RIGA (Sputnik) — On August 15, a meeting of the Russian-Latvian intergovernmental commission took place in Riga after a four-year-long hiatus.

"Each country has to think about how its economy is developing. We [Russia and Latvia] see that we can work together, shoulder to shoulder," Augulis said in an interview with the Baltkom radio broadcaster.

The minister added that Riga and Moscow authorities should maintain close contact to successfully cooperate.

The Russian-Latvian intergovernmental commission was established in 2007, with the commission's meeting earlier this August being the first since 2013.

Earlier in August, Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis at a meeting with Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said that Latvia was interested in developing constructive cooperation with Russia in border protection, migration, customs and transport.
