WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — President Donald Trump's newly signed executive order to impose sanctions on Venezuela will prevent US persons from engaging with the country's state-owned PDVSA oil company, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a briefing on Friday.

"Under the executive order, US persons are prohibited from engaging in specified dealings involving the government of Venezuela and its instrumentalities. This includes state owned oil company PDVSA," Mnuchin told reporters at the White House.

He added that the prohibitions extend to transactions or activities occurring in the United States and cover both debt and equity instruments.

Earlier on Friday, Trump signed an executive order imposing new financial sanctions against the Venezuelan government.

The White House said the measures were "carefully calibrated" to put financial pressure on the government of President Nicolas Maduro.
