MOSCOW (Sputnik) – At least eight police officers and one immigration service worker were killed in Myanmar in a series of simultaneous attacks targeting the country's police stations in the western Rakhine state, the press service of the Myanmar's State Counsellor Office said Friday.
"Extremist Bengali terrorists launch series of attacks on police stations and police outposts in Maungtaw Township… Altogether 8 police officers and one deputy township immigration officer totaling 9 died and six small arms and one walkie-talkie taken in the incidents while 16 extremist Bengali terrorists were found dead," the statement published on Facebook said.
According to the statement, the attacks were carried out ahead of the forthcoming session of the UN General Assembly, set for September, and special commission led by former UN chief Kofi Annan on the crisis in Rakhine.
Rakhine is a site of frequent clashes between Myanmar's Muslims and Buddhists. In 2016, the United Nations accused the country's military of committing atrocities against Muslims, while local authorities refuted the allegations. The Annan-led commission was established in 2016 to monitor the situation in Rakhine.
