MOSCOW (Sputnik) At least eight police officers and one immigration service worker were killed in Myanmar in a series of simultaneous attacks targeting the country's police stations in the western Rakhine state, the press service of the Myanmar's State Counsellor Office said Friday.

The statement added that the Myanmar's law enforcement agencies had already launched operations in the Maungtaw region to clear the area from attackers.

According to the statement, the attacks were carried out ahead of the forthcoming session of the UN General Assembly, set for September, and special commission led by former UN chief Kofi Annan on the crisis in Rakhine.

Rakhine is a site of frequent clashes between Myanmar's Muslims and Buddhists. In 2016, the United Nations accused the country's military of committing atrocities against Muslims, while local authorities refuted the allegations. The Annan-led commission was established in 2016 to monitor the situation in Rakhine.
