Bei Bei, a young male giant panda who lives at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington DC, has just turned 2 years old. Happy Birthday, Bei Bei!

Bei Bei was born on August 22, 2015, to 19-year-old Mei Xiang at the National Zoo. Five weeks after the birth, he was named by Michelle Obama and Peng Liyuan, the first ladies of the United States and the People's Republic of China. The name Bei Bei, which means "precious" or "treasure", was selected from a list of suggestions by officials from the National Zoo and the Wolong National Nature Reserve in China's Sichuan Province. The panda is part of US-China panda diplomacy, which is why he will be sent to live in the People's Republic of China at the age of 4.
