Berlin will not automatically take Washington's side in case of a military conflict between the United States and North Korea, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said according to Handelsblatt.

The chancellor emphasized she did not see a possibility to resolve the North Korea crisis by means of military actions and would consider them absolutely wrong. She added the international community should not resort to military options.

Merkel said more should be done to overcome the deadlock.

The North Korea crisis has intensified after an exchange of hostile rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang. North Korea threatened to attack the US' Guam, where military bases are located, while the US and South Korea started joint drills.

The 10-day joint US-South Korean military exercises, which are currently underway, involve about 17,500 US servicemen and about 50,000 South Korean troops. They have been criticized by Pyongyang as "reckless behavior driving the situation into the uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war."

On Tuesday, Sputnik talked with the charge d’affaires of the North Korean embassy in Russia, Jong Hyop, who said that North Korea is closely following the joint drills and is "ready to launch a preventive attack in case of provocation."
