At least 11 people have been confirmed dead after a boat carrying 70 passengers sank in Brazil overnight, according to Radio BandNews FM.

The Comandante Ribeiro boat sank on the Xingu River in the country's north. Twenty people have been saved, and the search and rescue operation continues.

The reason for the sinking could be a storm, local Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper suggested.

Police are checking whether the boat was overcrowded.
