'Great American Eclipse': United States Watches the Sun Go Dark
17:19 GMT 22.08.2017 (Updated: 19:31 GMT 19.10.2022) On August 21, a total solar eclipse was visible all across North America from the West to East Coast for the first time in 99 years. Millions of Americans gazed through protective glasses, cameras and telescopes, as the moon blotted out the midday sun.
The "Great American Eclipse" was seen across a narrow portion of the contiguous United States, while in the rest of the world the phenomenon was visible only as a partial eclipse.
The White House joined millions of Americans in watching this once-in-a-lifetime astronomical show: Donald and Melania Trump even risked looking at it without special glasses.
