US President Donald Trump applauded protesters in Boston for rising up against bigotry and hate and expressed support for police officers' handling of a Free Speech rally.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, a few dozen people gathered for a Free Speech rally at Boston Common park and were soon separated from thousands of counter-demonstrators by a heavy police force and barriers. Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said 27 arrests had been made.

"I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate. Our country will soon come together as one!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

The US president also praised law enforcement officers and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh for doing a "great job" during the protests.

Boston police took extra precautions to avoid a repeat of Charlottesville, where clashes erupted between protesters and counter-demonstrators. The violence culminated in the Virginia town when a Nazi supporter slammed his car into a group of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and leaving 19 others injured.
