Terror Threat Level in Germany Stays High Amid Catalonia Attacks - Ministry

The terror threat level in Germany remains high in light of the recent violent attack in the Spanish resort city of Barcelona and in the coastal town of Cambrils, south of Barcelona, the German Interior Ministry spokesman said on Friday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) – A total of 14 people were killed in the recent attacks that hit Spain's Catalonia on Thursday. A van drove into a crowd of pedestrians in the central Ramblas area in Barcelona, leaving 13 people dead and over 100 injured, in what police said was an act of terrorism. The Daesh (outlawed in Russia) terror group claimed responsibility for the attack. Hours after the incident another vehicle attack took place in Cambrils. A police officer and six civilians were injured and at least one of them died later.

"The level of the [terrorist] threat is high, it has been high before yesterday's horrible events and will remain high," Johannes Dimroth told reporters.

The official added that within the framework of the information received from the Spanish side there were no direct links between the attack in Barcelona and the situation in Germany, however this information was preliminary and investigations were ongoing.

Earlier in the day, Dimroth told Sputnik that the country's security agencies were in contact with their Spanish partners in the wake of the deadly incident, adding that Berlin could adjust security measures if necessary.
