Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has declared a three-day period of national mourning for those killed in Barcelona on Thursday, in what he has described as a "jihadist" attack.

MADRID (Sputnik) — Rajoy expressed condolences to those affected by terrorist attacks in Barcelona – but also in Madrid, Paris, Brussels, Nice, and London in the past years. He said terrorism could be defeated with unity, international assistance and a strong resolve to protect "democracy and our values."

"As a testimony to the pain of the Spanish people in the face of the brutal attack, the government declares official mourning from midnight on August 18 until midnight on August 20," Rajoy said at a televised press conference.
