General Dynamics won more than $115 million to maintain, update and support the Virginia-class attack submarines.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US defense giant General Dynamics won more than $115 million to maintain, update and support the Virginia-class attack submarines, the US Defense Department said in a press release.

"General Dynamics Electric Boat, Groton, Connecticut, is being awarded a $115,310,691 modification to a previously awarded contract for additional lead-yard services, development studies and design efforts related to Virginia-class submarines," the release said on Wednesday. "The contractor will also provide all engineering and related lead-yard services necessary for direct maintenance and support of Virginia-class ship specifications."

The release explained that the contract requires General Dynamics to continue development of studies and design efforts that evaluate new technologies to be inserted in future Virginia-class submarines.

Attack submarines are designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, according to published Navy documentation. They also project power ashore with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Special Operation Forces, carry out Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, support battle group operations, and engage in mine warfare.
