MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian media manager Demyan Kudryavtsev wrote about Chernov's death on his Facebook page.
"Andrei 'Ache' Chernov has died. [He was] the developer of the KOI8-R," he wrote.
Chernov participated in the launch of the first Internet channel that connected Russia with the global network, and contributed to FreeBSD open-source operating system, the OpenNET portal reported.
In recent years, he was seriously ill and almost never left his home. Memorial services will be held on August 19 near Moscow.
KOI8-R means "Code for Information Exchange [in Russian], 8 bit, Russian." It was widely used on Russian websites in earlier times, along with Windows-1251 encoding. In later years, they have been commonly being replaced with Unicode.
