Charlottesville Authorities Cancel Vigil Due to Threat From White Supremacists
The "Unite the Right" rally organized by far-right nationalists took place in Charlottesville on Saturday as a protest against the authorities' plans to remove a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a city park. The violence of the clashes between the far-right rallies and counter-protesters forced Governor of the US state of Virginia Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency in Charlottesville.

As the violence on the streets escalated, a man plowed his car into the crowd of protesters. As a result of the attack, a woman who was later identified as 32-year-old Heather Heyer, died, and 19 people sustained injuries.

Judge Robert Downer declined to set bond at a hearing Monday for Fields until he has legal representation.

The next court hearing on Fields' case is scheduled for August 25.

Earlier today, The Washington Post reported that back in high school, the young man had allegedly held supremacist views and felt "fascination" with Nazism.
