Newly appointed South Korean Army chief Gen. Kim Yong-woo vowed in his inauguration speech on Friday to boost the national forces' preparedness to fight and enhance troops reserves.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — South Korean leader Moon Jae-in repeatedly stressed the necessity of army reforms over frequent corruption accusations against high-ranking army officials.

"Based on a combat-focused perspective, I will tirelessly work toward meeting the needs of field troops who will stand prepared to fight tonight," Kim said, as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

He added that the forces needed to be reorganized, while non-combat duties should be transferred to the private sector, according to the news agency.

The situation on the Korean peninsula has become aggravated in recent months due to a series of missile launches and nuclear tests conducted by Pyongyang, all of which are claimed to be in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
