The Russian Security Council will keep the measures to enhance sustainability of electric power industry supply on Russia's Far East under "special control" following the incident with a large scale blackout in the region, the council's secretary, Nikolai Patrushev, said on Monday.

YAKUTSK (Sputnik) — On August 1, five high-voltage electrical transmission lines, including the one supplying power to China, switched off in Russia's far-eastern Khabarovsk Territory. According to the Russian Energy Ministry, the incident occurred over a short circuit at one of the power lines, leaving 1.5 million people without the electricity.

"The August 1 incident with a large-scale electricity switch-off in the integrated energy system of the Far East indicated the need to take additional measures on enhancing sustainability and safety of the electrical energy industry… This issue is particularly important, we will keep it under special control," Patrushev said at a meeting on national security in the Far Eastern Federal District.

Patrushev added that the swift operation of electrical energy was particularly important for the Far Eastern and Trans-Baikal railways.
