MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Iraqi parliament voted on Monday in favor of holding municipal elections in conjunction with parliamentary elections in April 2018, Abbas Bayati, a lawmaker from Iraq’s Shia National Alliance bloc, said on Monday.
"A majority of MPs voted today to conduct local elections — initially slated for September — at the same time as next April’s parliamentary polls," Bayati was quoted as saying by the Anadolu news agency.
The lawmaker stressed that the decision was taken on the basis of a proposal submitted earlier by the parliament's legal committee.
According to the media outlet, local polls have been postponed with the aim to reduce the high administrative costs of the elections.
