On Thursday, PSG signed the Brazilian forward to a five-year contract, purchasing him from Barcelona for the unprecedented 222 million euros ($264 million), thus making the priciest buy in the history of professional football.
“FIFPro is calling on the European Commission to investigate the flow of money via transfer fees within the EU territory to understand their impact on competitive balance in the region. The world record transfer of Brazilian Neymar from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain is the latest example of how football is ever more the domain of a select group of rich, mostly European-based clubs," van Seggelen said.
The statement calls on the European Commission to revise the transfer legislation it approved in 2001 and conduct an in-depth investigation of the financial activity of the European clubs, exchanging massive sums during transfer periods.
"The transfer rules governed by FIFA [International Federation of Association Football] are anti-competitive, unjustified and illegal," the union's head insisted.
Neymar's transfer doubled the previous record football deal, with France's Paul Pogba joining the United Kingdom's Manchester United for 105 million euros in 2016.
