"The European Commission has awarded an additional €9.3 million in emergency assistance to UNCHR to provide targeted support to refugees and migrants in Greece. The grant, which will ensure continuity of services on the islands, covers activities including the provision of transportation, accommodation and auxiliary services to relocation candidates, protection and non-formal education for children (including support to a pilot guardianship network for unaccompanied minors), interpretation, core relief items and support for victims of sexual and gender-based violence and abuse," the statement said.
According to the statement, the European Union has so far managed to raise funds amounting to 1.3 billion euros to assist Greece in managing migration problem.
Since 2015, Europe has been experiencing the worst migration crisis in its history, struggling to accommodate hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants fleeing hostilities in the Middle Eastern and North African countries. More than 110,000 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe by sea in 2017.
According to Refugee Situations Operational Portal, 11,692 migrants have reached Greece's shores since the beginning of the year. Most of them are coming from Syria (35.5 percent) and Iraq (13.4 percent).
