The United States killed one of the high-ranking commanders of the radical group al-Shabaab, linked to al-Qaeda (a terrorist organization, outlawed in Russia), in Somalia, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a press release on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the press release, Jabal was responsible for the militant group's operations in the capital of Somalia Mogadishu and Banaadir region. The terrorist reportedly planned attacks in Mogadishu.

US Airstrikes in Somalia Kill High-Ranking Militant

"On July 30 at approximately 3 p.m. Somalia local time [12:00 GMT], the Department of Defense conducted a successful kinetic strike near Tortoroow in southern Somalia, killing al-Shabaab’s Ali Muhammad Hussein, known as Ali Jabal," the statement said.

The operation was conducted jointly with the US regional partners countering al-Shabaab activities in Somalia, with no civilian casualties reported, the statement said.

Somalia has been experiencing violence since the eruption of the civil war between the clan-based armed factions in the country in the early 1990s. Al-Shabaab has been staging numerous attacks in the country in an attempt to establish the strict Sharia law in it.

In March, US President Donald Trump approved a Defense Department request to intensify strikes against al-Shabaab in Somalia.
