The New York Immigration Coalition will fight against the White House proposal for legislation to curb migrant visa program, right group's spokesperson told Sputnik on Thursday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Numerous lawmakers criticized the recently unveiled bill that would cut in half the number of annually issued permanent residence cards, commonly known as "green cards," by 2026.

"[US President Donald] Trump's plan to slash legal immigration is just another senseless attack on our country's values," the spokesperson said. "Trump doesn't get that immigrants are good for America — good for our economy, our families and our communities, and this plan is just a mean-spirited fallback to vitriol and division."

The spokesperson explained the immigration bill would stifle labor force, impair US economy and divide families, but would not enhance national security.

Republican Senator Tom Cotton, who co-sponsored the bill alongside Senator David Perdue, told MSNBC on Thursday that the legislation proposal would benefit US working class by eliminating unnecessary competition with low-skilled migrant workers.

The New York Immigration Coalition is an advocacy organization comprised of nearly 200 groups in New York State that work with immigrants and refugees.
