The Global Footprint Network reported that Earth Overshoot Day 2017, or the day when the humanity exhausts all the resources the Earth can reproduce within the year, has come on Wednesday, August 2.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earth Overshoot Day 2017, or the day when the humanity exhausts all the resources the Earth can reproduce within the year, has come on Wednesday, August 2, the Global Footprint Network (GFN) said.

"Today is Earth #Overshoot Day—the date when humanity’s annual demand on nature exceeds what Earth can regenerate over the entire year!" GFN wrote on its Facebook page.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) also marked August 2, calling on the world community to be more responsible about their daily activities as they affect the environment.

"The Earth provides us with vital things like freshwater, food and air — and, up to a certain point, it has an amazing capacity to regenerate. But we can’t keep taking and expect the Earth to cope," WWF Media Relations Manager Rucha Naware said in a statement.

Regional WWF branches also reacted, reminding the global community that for the rest of the year it would be borrowing Earth resources from forthcoming generations.

"The Earth Overshoot Day, when people have fully consumed the planet's resources for 2017, is today, August 2. In early 2000s this day arrived in October, but it keeps coming earlier. This year, people already need 170 percent of the planet's resources to provide for their basic needs in agriculture, forestry and fishery production and absorption of CO2 emissions," the WWF Russia statement reads.

Earth Overshoot Day is regularly computed by GFN, and supported by a number of other environmental organizations around the world, which are also concerned with the problem of over-consumption, such as WWF. This campaign is aimed at encouraging people to change their lifestyles to reduce their ecological footprint, or the effect they have on the environment.
