KABUL (Sputnik) — At least eight civilians were killed and six others were wounded in an airstrike carried out by foreign forces against militants of the Daesh terrorist group in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province, Nangarhar governor's press service said in a statement on Monday.
"The bombing carried out by foreign forces in Haska Mena district resulted in the death of eight civilians, including a woman, and left six women and children injured," the statement said.
The local authorities suggested that the strike was carried out by the US forces in response to shelling by terrorists, and resulted in killing a total of 25 Daesh militants and injuring 15 others.
Afghanistan has been experiencing significant political, social and security-related instability for decades, as terrorist organizations, including the Daesh and the Taliban radical movement (banned in Russia) continue to stage attacks against civilian and military targets.
The United States and its allies launched a military operation in Afghanistan in 2001 following 9/11 terror attacks. The mission in Afghanistan ended on December 28, 2014. On January 1, 2015, NATO announced its new mission in the country, called Resolute Support, to train and assist the Afghan security forces.
