ANKARA (Sputnik) — According to the CNN Turk broadcaster, the police urged the participants of the unsanctioned protest to leave the central Ankara's Kizilay square and had to use water cannons and tear gas, as the protesters refused to abide.

Two Turkish teachers, Nuriye Gulmen and Semih Ozakca, were dismissed last fall under the Turkish emergency decrees adopted after the failed coup attempt that took place in July 2016. Both teachers were later detained on grounds of their alleged involvement in activities of the movement of US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who stands accused by Ankara of staging the coup.

Following the coup attempt, Turkish authorities have detained thousands of journalists, diplomats, judges, members of the military and human rights activists over their alleged support for Gulen.
