US Attorney General Jeff Sessions is not going to resign following the publications alleging he had discussed issues related to President Donald Trump's campaign in two meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the 2016 election, local media reported Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Sessions would only leave his post if the US President were to fire him, ABC News reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.

US Media Claims Sessions, Russian Ambassador Discussed Trump Campaign Topics
On Friday, the Washington Post claimed citing two US officials that Sessions and Kislyak allegedly raised several Trump-related matters, including then-Republican candidate's stance on Russia and expectations for the US-Russia relationship after the election.

In March, Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation after the Washington Post reported that he held two meetings with the Russian ambassador, despite denying contacts with Russian officials at his confirmation hearing.

On Wednesday, Trump said in an interview with New York Times that he would have never nominated Sessions for the post if he knew the then-senator would recuse himself from overseeing the Justice Department’s Russia probe.

Recently, there have been many reports by US media — most frequently with references to unnamed sources — about alleged contacts of Trump's campaign team with Russian officials and businessmen. A number of Trump’s campaign associates — now White House staff — are being investigated by Congressional committees and a Justice Department special counselor to determine if they colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election in Trump’s favor.

Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that there was no proof that Russia was meddling in the election processes of the United States, Germany, France, or the United Kingdom, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov added that Moscow has never interfered in foreign states' internal affairs and is not intending to do so in the future.
