Israel plans to open a clinic near Syria’s southwestern border in the contested Golan Heights where Syrians could receive medical treatment, an Israeli Northern Command officer said Wednesday.

GOLAN HEIGHTS (Sputnik) — The officer claimed the clinic was scheduled to be built from scratch in a fortnight and would be staffed by volunteer doctors from around the world. No construction work has begun yet, a Sputnik correspondent said.

"We are across the fence but still in the Israeli land," the officer told reporters at a briefing in the disputed territory. "This parcel is ideal for an ambulatory care medical facility."

Relations between Israel and Syria have been strained by the Golan Heights dispute. Hostilities also regularly escalate as Israel hits targets in Syria in response to alleged cross-border fire incidents.
