EU to Decide Monday on Sending Civil Experts on Security Reforms to Iraq

The EU foreign ministries’ heads will make a decision on sending a civil mission to Iraq for assistance in implementing security reforms on July 17, a high-ranking EU official said on Friday, days after the liberation of the Iraqi Mosul from Daesh.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — "The Council will also adopt a decision on the establishment of a new civilian CSDP [Common Security and Defence Policy] mission in Iraq to support security sector reform. That is something that is being set up at the request of the Iraqi authorities comes at in important time after the liberation of Mosul from the Daesh (terror group, banned in Russia) forces," the official, who requested anonymity, said.

In June, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that the European Union was considering an opportunity of sending experts to Iraq on introducing reforms in the security sphere in the next two months.

On Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi announced a victory over Daesh in Mosul, the country’s second-largest city, that had been occupied by militants for over three years.
