WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US military eliminated Abu Sayed, leader of an affiliate of the Daesh terror group (banned in Russia) in Afghanistan, along with his associates during a raid it conducted three days ago, US Department of Defense spokesperson Dana White said in a statement on Friday.

"US forces killed Abu Sayed, the emir of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria — Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), in a strike on the group's headquarters in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, July 11," White stated.

The spokesperson noted that Abu Sayed became the Islamic State leader in Afghanistan after its previous head, Hafiz Sayed Khan, was killed in July 2016.

Afghanistan has been experiencing significant political, social and security-related instability for decades, as terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State terrorist group and the Taliban radical movement — both banned in Russia — continue to stage attacks against civilian and military targets.
