On July 11, 2017, the US Missile Defense Agency, together with the Ballistic Missile Defense System Operational Test Agency and US Army soldiers of the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, conducted a successful intercept test of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

A THAAD weapon system located at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Alaska detected, tracked and intercepted an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) target, which was air-launched over the Pacific Ocean north of Hawaii. It was the first-ever test of the THAAD system against an incoming IRBM target.
