US State Department Reportedly Plans to Eliminate Envoy to Afghanistan, Pakistan
23:41 GMT 23.06.2017 (Updated: 11:45 GMT 06.08.2022) The US State Department will scrap the post of special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan just as President Donald Trump’s administration is reevaluating its security strategy in the region, media reported.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The decision to eliminate a US policy official for these two countries comes as Trump is getting ready to announce the administration's new plan on Afghanistan, The Wall Street Journal said on Friday, citing senior government officials.
Tillerson mentioned in congressional testimony last week that the department was initiating a policy review of the United States’ ties with and support for Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Tillerson added in the hearing that Washington may cut back its assistance to Pakistan in the future.
In 2009, former President Barack Obama appointed Ambassador Richard Holbrooke to become the first Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP).
