Putin, Erdogan to Discuss Syria Truce at May 3 Meeting in Sochi - Ankara
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Aggression against Syria will further complicate the six-year crisis and fan violence in the Middle East, Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan said Tuesday.

"Any aggressive actions taken against Syria will lead to the complication of this crisis, the expansion of the scale of military operations and the continuation of violence in the region," Dehqan said as quoted by the Lebanon-based Al Mayadeen satellite broadcaster.

Dehqan's statement came ahead of the meeting between the guarantor states of the ceasefire regime in Syria, at the fourth two-day round of Astana talks, which is due to start on Wednesday.

Iran is the guarantor of Syrian truce alongside Russia and Turkey. The regime was introduced on December 30, 2016, and supported by the resolution of the United Nations Security Council.

The military conflict in Syria has been raging since 2011 between forces of the country's President Bashar Assad and numerous opposition and terrorist groups including the Islamic State (outlawed in Russia), which is not a part of the Syrian truce. According to the recent estimates by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, the conflict has likely claimed 400,000 deaths.
