On Thursday evening, French President Francois Hollande declared the attack on Champs Elysees hours earlier was "of terrorist nature."

Hollande said he would hold a security cabinet meeting on Friday morning. The president added that French security forces will practice the utmost vigilance in safeguarding the election process. The first round of the French presidential election is slated to be held on Sunday. 

He confirmed two fatalities: one police officer and one attacker, and said three have been injured. Previous reports said two police officers were seriously injured. 

"My thoughts go to the family of the killed policeman and the relatives of the wounded," Hollande tweeted, adding that "a national tribute will be given."
