Turkish Stream: Prospects of Delivering Russian Gas to Europe Bypassing Ukraine
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The construction of a second branch of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline depends on Moscow and Brussels, Turkey's Ambassador in Moscow Huseyin Dirioz said Monday.

"Construction of the second branch depends on the agreements reached between Russia and the European Union," Dirioz said at a Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency roundtable on Russian-Turkish ties.

On Thursday, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said that the legal framework for the construction of the first branch of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline had been prepared, adding that the first branch would be implemented by the end of 2019.

The Turkish Stream project was announced in late 2014 by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his state visit to Turkey. The intergovernmental agreement envisioning the construction of two underwater legs of the gas pipeline in the Black Sea was signed in October 2016. Each leg would carry 15.75 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.

The pipeline is expected to be built by the end of 2019. It will make a landfall in Turkey and continue to a hub on the Greek border, from where Russian natural gas could be transferred to southern Europe. Russia's energy company Gazprom will own rights for both underwater legs of the pipeline. The land stretch of the first leg will be owned by the Turkish customers, whereas the land stretch of the second leg will be controlled by a joint venture.
