This incredible light show called the Aurora is caused by collisions between electrically charged particles released from the sun that enter the Earth's atmosphere and collide with gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. In recent days, the northern lights were visible from the UK, with the best night-time display seen in Scotland and the northern part of England.
