WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Lockheed Martin Aeronautics has received a more than $1 billion contract to supply regular logistics support and sustainment services for the US armed forces’ F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, the Department of Defense said in a press release.

“Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company [of] Fort Worth, Texas is being awarded a $1.059 billion… contract for recurring logistics support and sustainment services for F-35 Lightning II aircraft,” the announcement stated on Tuesday.

The contract will cover F-35 units operated by the US Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, non-Department of Defense participants and foreign military sales (FMS) customers, the Defense Department explained.

“Sustainment services to be provided include ground maintenance, action request resolution, depot activation, Automatic Logistics Information System, operations and maintenance, reliability and maintainability,” the announcement added.

The F-35 program has Navy, Air Force and Marine variants of the fifth generation aircraft. The program is the most expensive weapon system in the history of the Defense Department.
